How to Compare Wedding Venue Proposals Before You Book

You find a few wedding venues you love, request proposals, and then realize something frustrating:

None of the quotes seem to work the same way.

One venue charges per guest. Another has a food and beverage minimum. One includes the ceremony while another charges for it separately. Then there are service charges, rentals, staffing fees, taxes and gratuity.

So how do you figure out which venue actually costs less?

Don't just compare the totals

Start by looking at what each proposal actually includes.

Check the ceremony, venue fees, food and beverage, minimums, staffing, rentals, service charges and other required costs.

Then put the proposals side by side.

A venue may appear less expensive simply because something included by another venue isn't part of its proposal.

That doesn't make either venue better or worse. It just means the prices may not be an apples-to-apples comparison.

Don't guess at missing information

If something isn't clear, don't automatically enter $0 or assume it's included.

Write down the question and ask the venue.

Sometimes “I need to confirm this” is one of the most useful things you can learn from a comparison.
